Otis Redding Limited Vinyl Box Set Announced

R&B

Rhino has announced its plans to release a limited vinyl box set featuring all four of Otis Redding’s posthumous albums.

The box set, Otis Forever: The Albums & Singles (1968-1970), will release June 9. The six-LP set not only includes Redding’s posthumous albums but also features mono versions of 24 singles from those albums.

Each album will be pressed in different colors: The Dock of the Bay (yellow); The Immortal Otis Redding (silver); Love Man (green); and Tell the Truth (blue). The Singles 1968-1970 will also be pressed in yellow.

The exclusive multi-color vinyl set costs $149.98 and will be limited to 1,000 copies. The six-LP black vinyl costs $124.98 and will be widely available.

The King of Soul tragically passed away at age 26 from a plane crash in December 1967. The Dock of the Bay, Redding’s first posthumous album, was released in February 1968.

The album included “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” which spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It made history as the first posthumous single to top the Hot 100.

The song also scored Redding two Grammys at the 11th ceremony (Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song). “Dock of the Bay” was Redding’s final recording.

The Immortal Otis Redding was released in the summer of 1968, while Love Man arrived in 1969 and Tell the Truth in 1970.

Redding released five solo albums and a duets album between 1964 and 1967: Pain in My Heart (1964); The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads (1965); Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul (1965); The Soul Album (1966); Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul (1966); and King & Queen with Carla Thomas (1967).

In September 2022, The Otis Redding Foundation celebrated what would have been Redding’s 81st birthday. The organization hosted a two-day event in Macon, Georgia, where Redding was raised.

The celebration included a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Otis Redding Center for the Arts, a multipurpose space committed to musical education for students ages 3 to 18. According to the Foundation’s website, “planning is well underway with a proposed opening in late 2024.”

Otis Forever: The Albums & Singles (1968-1970) is available for pre-order now. See the tracklisting below.
