During the U.S.’ Prohibition Era between January 1920 and December 1933, bootleggers developed a brisk trade illegally manufacturing and distributing alcohol to consumers who couldn’t buy it in a store. To do this, they modified ordinary-looking cars to drive faster than normal vehicles and carry as much liquor as possible.
These modified “runner” cars were also used for entertainment, beginning with informal community races. This laid the foundation for the stock car racing sport that would become NASCAR.
