Killer black ‘n’ roll records are rare in the American underground, which makes Summer, the debut album from Raleigh, North Carolina rockers Valletta, even more enjoyable. Formed by members of Mo’ynoq and Lord Almighty along with vocalist Will Goodyear (Prayer for Cleansing, Hopesfall, ex-Between the Buried and Me), Valletta play black ‘n’ roll that’s inspired by mid-career Satyricon and Celtic Frost, with a healthy love for arena rock thrown in there.
Valletta keep things simple on the latest single, “On the Run,” using simple but catchy riffs to drive the song, the vocals alternating between Goodyear’s snarl and energetic gang vocals. When they announced the album, Valletta stressed the importance of duality: juxtaposing heavy grime and catchy melodies. That dynamic is there in spades on the latest single, which you can check out below.
Summer is out on October 4 via Forcefield Records.
