If Rush were from Oregon and predisposed toward a belief in Eastern concepts of reincarnation and other metaphysical topics that many an Oregonian has pondered (while no doubt under the influence of psychedelics), they’d probably sound a whole lot like Portland trio Light Creates Shadow, on their new single, “Beauty For Ashes.” Which is to say, this moss-covered trio—Marc Changnon (guitar/vocals), Jered Johnson (bass), Adam Young (drums)—create progressive, psych-influenced proto-metal that takes us back to Caress of Steel or Fly by Night, complete with high, countertenor vocals, an active rhythm section and a whole lotta words. “Beauty For Ashes” is like the weird second cousin of “Fly by Night,” with a little Pink Floyd in that DNA. You know, the kind of music that can surely only originate in Oregon.
