Steve Lacy has achieved a new milestone on Spotify. His hit single “Bad Habit” has amassed over one billion streams on the platform.
It’s Lacy’s second song to hit over one billion streams on Spotify, following 2017’s “Dark Red.” The latter track crossed the billion mark in October 2023.
Lacy produced “Bad Habit” and co-wrote it with John Carroll Kirby, Fousheé, Diana Gordon and Matthew Castellanos.
“Bad Habit” was the second single from sophomore album, Gemini Rights, released July 14, 2022 via RCA Records.
The album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart with 34,000 equivalent units sold in the first week. The 10-track album features Matt Martians and Fousheé.
“It’s a story that is very fluid [and] very fun. To me, the subject matter could be sad if you look at it that way, but I feel like it is way more hopeful — and that’s the story: finding happiness. I’m finding myself after a heartbreak,” Lacy explained to Grammy.com.
“Bad Habit” peaked at No. 1 on the Hot 100 during the week of Oct. 8, 2022, marking Lacy’s first chart-topper.
Gemini Rights landed Lacy four nominations at the 65th Grammy Awards in 2023, including Best Progressive R&B Album, Best Pop Solo Performance, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (“Bad Habit”). He won in the first category, scoring his first Grammy trophy.
Lacy hasn’t released music since his Gemini Rights era but has been keeping busy. He co-produced Summer Walker’s “Agayu’s Revelation” from her Grammy-nominated project, CLEAR 2: SOFT LIFE EP.
His band, The Internet, recently shared photos of them in the studio seemingly working on new music.
Speaking of The Internet, they landed two new certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) last year.
“Girl” featuring Kaytranada was certified platinum for selling over one million equivalent units and “Special Affair” was deemed gold for selling 500,000 units.
Both songs are lifted from their third album, Ego Death, which was among Rated R&B’s 50 Best R&B Albums of the 2010s list.
