The band recently played ‘Marianne’ during the final ever BBC live session at Maida Vale, and bassist Conor Deegan explained that the track had initially been discarded from the album, untiltheir late manager Trevor Dietztold them they were “absolute lunatics” for leaving it out.The song has now been dedicated to Dietz, who Fontaines have described as their “sixth member”.
NMEhas given ‘Marianne’ a five-star review, noting: “That predecessor was just astepping stonefor ‘Dopamine Chamber’,which follows the rabbit deeper down the hole in search of more mechanical extremes and orchestral noir flourishes to explore the true, numbing oblivion of the modern world. ‘Marianne’ is the red pill you take to come along and see the truth of it all: “Understand this is yourlife, you can go on dreaming…”
Discussing the concept behind the new record, frontmanGrian Chattenhas said: “The album itself is a dopamine chamber. You step inside and we test these different mind or mood-altering pieces of music on you.”
Speaking toNMEearlier this year, guitarist Carlos O’Connell said he liked the idea of making their Reading & Leeds setlist “maybe abit more ‘Dogrel’-heavy”, butadded that “anything could happen now – literally anything.”
