Video Premiere: Malediction – ‘Black Narcissus’

Metal

It’s been a pretty long time since UK death dealers Malediction released new music but things are looking good for the quintet these days. Originally forming in 1989 and active until 1996, then again briefly from 2000 to 2001, Malediction fully reunited with multiple original members.

In 2016, Malediction—who feature former members of Godthrymm, Gorerotted and Monstrance—released the Chronology of Distortion compilation, which featured a few unreleased tracks. Before that, their last release was 2000’s Shadows of Iniquity demo, so it comes as good news that Malediction will release new EP The Soil Throne later this year. To get you hype, we’ve got the new video for first single “Black Narcissus” streaming right now.

According to guitarist Rich Mumford, it’s the band’s first piece of new—not previously unreleased—music in three decades. It’s a strong return to form for Malediction, who get straight down to business with melodic, meat-and-potatoes death metal. Loaded with blast beats, melodic leads and solos and in-your-face riffs, “Black Narcissus” is a strong taste of the new EP. The accompanying video thankfully avoids the typical pitfalls of a lyric video by utilizing highly-stylized video footage that makes it feel more like a cinematic video.

Check out “Black Narcissus” below; you can hit Malediction’s Bandcamp for more info.
