No doubt Nashville quintet Flummox flummox the hell out of people with their progressive, genre-hopping symphonic thrash, as evidenced by their latest single, “Executive Dysfunction.” This madcap nearly six-minute track finds Flummox—Alyson Blake Dellinger (vocals/bass/stunt guitar), Max Mobarry (guitars/vocals/midi), Chase McCutcheon (guitars), Jesse Peck (keys/programming), Alan Pfeifer (drums)—skating between majestic metal crush and piano-led shuffles. Their Bungaloid metal is totally entertaining, and the players sew together all the sonic pieces cleverly.

“Executive Dysfunction” is the latest single from Flummox’s upcoming full-length, Southern Progress, which was produced by the band, engineered and mixed by McCutcheon (with bass and drum sessions engineered by Jason Dietz) and mastered by Jamie King at the Basement Recording, NC. It’s set for release on March 21, 2025 via Needlejuice Records and the single drops on November 22. Place your preorder here.

This is what Dellinger and Mobarry had to say about the new single:

Alyson Black Dellinger:  “‘Executive Dysfunction’ is a common symptom of ADHD, and neurodivergence of multiple kinds. Basically, it’s when your brain locks you in place—like, you know you have a lot of work that needs to be done, but whatever it is in your brain that allows you to prioritize tasks, focus and get things done shuts down completely. And you’re completely aware of it. It’s definitely something that anybody who has ADHD has experienced, and it’s something I wanted to write about, because it’s one of the main characteristics of my own neurodivergence, and it’s been a big hindrance for my mental health. So the song really comes from a place of vulnerability.”

Max Mobarry: “With Flummox, we’re known for songs like ‘Trans Girls Need Guns’ that lyrically deal with social issues, but ‘Executive Dysfunction’ speaks to something more introspective. It’s the battle that’s happening within—an anthem for when your greatest obstacle is yourself.”
