The latest single from Greek post-black metal progressives Euphrosyne, “Funeral Rites,” is not a track to lift post-holiday spirits. Taken from the quartet’s upcoming debut full-length, Morus, it’s part of the album’s conceptual meditation on the death of guitarist Alex Despotidis’s mother from cancer in 2017. So, yeah, a little bleak, but moving nonetheless. The band—Efi Eva (vocals), George Gazis (bass), Stelios Pepinidis (drums)—build slowly, from a quiet intro to a raging, emotional maelstrom at the close.
The powerful track was mixed and mastered by Psychon, with vocals tracked at Sound Abuse Productions studio. The single is available for preorder here. Look for the full-length to drop March 21 via Black Lion Records.
Here’s a quote from the band regarding its latest single:
“‘Funeral Rites’ is one of the darkest songs on Morus. With an immersive and atmospheric way, it tells the story of the ceremony at the burial of the Mother. The beginning of the track is a dark narration of how it feels to carry the dead and how you project yourself as one of them. Following a rough outbreak, feelings of guilt, anger and despair are released. The song ends with a redemptive chorus and the wish that one day we’ll meet those who have been lost from our lives.”
