London-based Sardinian black-death metal force COGAS is set to unleash their second full-length album, Among the Dead: How to Become a Ghost, on April 24, 2025—a harrowing and deeply personal meditation on loss, generational trauma, and the stark realities of their homeland. Today, Decibel is proud to premiere “The Noble Rot”, a bold and uncompromising statement of intent from an album that pushes COGAS into their most intense and structured songwriting yet.

Inspired by Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built, the track’s concept draws from the film’s chilling metaphor of The Noble Rot, a fungus that decays grapes to produce refined sweet wine—a twisted analogy used by the film’s protagonist to justify his crimes. COGAS repurposes this metaphor to explore the shameless nature of their own character within the album’s dark narrative, paying homage to von Trier’s masterful (and, for now, final) film.

Musically, “The Noble Rot” is an onslaught of relentless, thunderous rhythms and shifting vocal dynamics, culminating in a finale that nods to the early 2000s era of extreme metal—when raw expression and theatricality coexisted in their most feral forms. The track captures the essence of COGAS’ sound: a perfect balance of frenzied aggression, cold atmosphere, and intricate structure.

The band comments:

“Musically speaking, with ‘The Noble Rot’, we deliberately aimed for bold and uncompromising black-death metal songwriting. The track’s death metal essence is conveyed through relentless, thunderous rhythms, accompanied by vocals that shift in tone and dynamics, ultimately culminating in a finale that pays tribute to a certain style of extreme music from the early 2000s—an era when music was both raw expression and theater.”

Brace yourself for the relentless assault of “The Noble Rot”, streaming now. Among the Dead: How to Become a Ghost arrives April 24th.
