SZA Leads 2024 Grammy Awards Nominations

R&B

The 2024 Grammy Awards nominees have been revealed. Alt-R&B star SZA is the most-nominated artist this year with nine nods, including three in the General Field.

Her blockbuster sophomore album, SOS, is nominated for Album of the Year. The stacked category also includes World Music Radio (Jon Batiste); the record (boygenius); Endless Summer Vacation (Miley Cyrus); Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd (Lana Del Rey); The Age of Pleasure (Janelle Monáe); GUTS (Olivia Rodrigo); and Midnights (Taylor Swift).

It’s SZA’s first nomination in the Album of the Year category as a lead artist. She scored a nod at the 64th Grammy Awards for her contribution to Doja Cat’s Planet Her (Deluxe), which included their Grammy-winning collaboration “Kiss Me More.”

SZA’s hit single “Kill Bill” is up for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 in April, landing SZA her first No. 1 hit on this chart. At the time of publishing, “Kill Bill” has amassed 1.43 billion streams on Spotify.

In the R&B, Rap & Spoken Word Poetry Field, SZA has four nods in the R&B categories. “Kill Bill” is up for Best R&B Performance, while “Love Language,” another track from SOS, is nominated for Best Traditional R&B Performance. It’s SZA’s first nomination in this category.

Meanwhile, her Babyface and Leon Thomas-co-penned “Snooze” is nominated for Best R&B Song, a songwriter’s award. Unsurprisingly, SOS scoops up a nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album.

Released Dec. 10, 2022, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 318,000 equivalent units sold in the first week.

According to Billboard, SOS garnered 404.58 million on-demand streams in its opening week, the biggest streaming week ever for an R&B album. It was also the second-largest streaming week in history for an album by a female artist.

Since its release, SOS has spent 47 weeks at the peak position on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. It made history as the longest-running No. 1 on that chart after its 41st week, breaking The Weeknd’s record (40 weeks) with his 2020 album, After Hours.

SZA is reportedly gearing up to release a deluxe edition of SOS, which is said to be titled Lana. SZA shared the news in September at a special album celebration event in Brooklyn, New York.

In a fan-captured video, SZA told the audience that the upcoming deluxe will arrive this fall. “So the deluxe is like a whole ‘nother album, and it’s called Lana. It’s seven to 10 songs, and it’ll be out this fall,” SZA, whose real name is Solana Rowe, told the crowd.

A release date has not been announced for Lana at the time of publication.
