Progressive black metal duo Tómarúm have never shied away from pushing their sound—or themselves—to the limit. Their 2022 debut, Ash in Realms of Stone Icons, was a dizzying display of technicality and catharsis, but with their newly announced album, Beyond Obsidian Euphoria, the band sets out on an even grander journey.

“This record is a 70-minute conceptual journey of fiery passion and triumph, an ascent to uncharted peaks in our endless search for purpose, solace, and healing,” guitarist/vocalist Kyle Walburn explains. “Beyond Obsidian Euphoria, life begins anew. Standing strong as stone, yet forever aware of the ash from which it was molded.”

What better way to introduce that vision than with the album’s first single, “Shed This Erroneous Skin”—a towering, anthemic declaration of self-acceptance and authenticity. Walburn calls it his favorite Tómarúm song to date, not just for its massive, uplifting sound but for its deeply personal message.

“Here I address a lifelong struggle with my identity as a gay man, after having grown up in the southern United States around a ton of homophobia,” he shares. “The acceptance and embrace of my true self was a massive turning point in the search for inner peace that shaped this record. While the lyrics have a specific meaning to me, I have written them generally enough that the listener may derive their own meaning.”

That emotional weight carries through every note of “Shed This Erroneous Skin,” which moves from blistering intensity to soaring, triumphant heights—an embodiment of the album’s themes of rebirth and resilience. With Beyond Obsidian Euphoria, Tómarúm stand ready to ascend.

Beyond Obsidian Euphoria arrives later this year. Step into its world below.
