R&B

Alternative singer and songwriter serpentwithfeet has announced his third studio album, GRIP, will release Feb. 16, 2024, via Secretly Canadian.

The upcoming album will consist of 10 tracks, which is one less than the number of tracks in his previous album releases.

It will include his freshly-released track, “Damn Gloves,” which features Ty Dolla $ign and Yanga YaYa. The energetic club track was co-produced by serpentwithfeet alongside Nosaj Thing, I Like That, Mike Irish and S. Dot.

Of his new single, serpentwithfeet says, “I didn’t wanna waste this chance to celebrate my waist in his hands.”

“Damn Gloves” arrives with a supporting video directed by Micaiah Carter. It can be watched below.

Regarding the visual, serpentwithfeet wrote in a post, “the geniusss @micaiahcarter & I have been planning this collab for a whiiiiile !!! i’ve been telling folks that Black gay nightlight spaces have raised me a 2nd time. so this music video is an ode to all those wonderous moments in Miami, Atlanta, DC & NYC.”

GRIP will mark serpentwithfeet’s first album since 2021’s DEACON, which included tracks such as “Same Size Shoe” and “Heart Storm” featuring Nao.

DEACON’S Grove, a companion EP by serpentwithfeet, was released that same year and featured guest appearances from Ambré and Alex Isley. “I wanted this EP to feel loving and a little playful,” he explained.

Later that year, DEACON was featured on Rated R&B’s 30 Best R&B Albums of 2021 list

From then to now, serpentwithfeet has shared several standalone song releases, including “I’m Pressed” and “Gonna Go.”

Serpentwithfeet is almost finished with his Heart of Brick tour, a theatrical production that focused on Black queer nightlife. He performed new music from his forthcoming album during the show.

“The dance floor has been a medium for Black queer people to decompress and build community,” he explained about Heart of Brick.

He added, “Going out has given me incentive to go inward and I am a better person because of it. Engaging the body is essential to engaging the spirit. I have Proof.”
