Mariah Carey Lands Six New RIAA Certifications

R&B

Mariah Carey has achieved six new single certifications from RIAA, including two coinciding with the 30th anniversary (Aug. 31) of her third album, Music Box.

“Hero,” the album’s second single, has been certified 3x multi-platinum with sales of over three million equivalent units.

The signature song spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, beginning Dec. 25, 1993. It also earned a Best Female Pop Vocal Performance nod in 1995.

“Anytime You Need a Friend,” also from Music Box, just went certified gold with 500,000 equivalent units sold.

Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day” featuring Boyz II Men saw shifts in certification levels. Taken from Daydream, her 1995 hit-generating album, the former song, which topped the Hot 100 chart for eight weeks, is now 6x multi-platinum.

Meanwhile, the emotional song “One Sweet Day” is now 4x multi-platinum. It debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart, becoming the fourth song in chart history to accomplish this feat. With a record-breaking 16 weeks at the top of the Hot 100 chart, it became the longest-running single for 23 years.

Carey also gained platinum honors for “Love Takes Time” and “Thank God I Found You.” The former track appears on her self-titled 1990 album, while the latter, which features Joe and 98 Degrees, is lifted from 1999’s Rainbow.

Circling back to the 30th anniversary of Music Box, Carey will be boxing up memories of the album in a special campaign to be started Sept. 8.

“Wind it up! It’s the anniversary of MUSIC BOX! A whopping whole 30 minutes since the album was first released,” wrote Carey for caption featuring a reel that breaks down the celebration. “I’ll never forget creating this record, fully immersing myself in the music that would change my life and connect me with YOU, the lambily, in a way that bonded us forever.”

Various iterations of Music Box will be available, including 4LP, 3CD, and cassette versions of the original album. An expanded digital version will be available with new and unreleased tracks.

Other bonuses include a mini-feature documentary taking fans behind the scenes of “Dreamlover.” The video for the latter will be remastered in 4K resolution. Carey’s 1993 concert at Proctor’s Theater, Schenectady, NY, will be digitally remastered. And, there are even more surprises in store.
