Keith Bynum celebrated Mother’s Day by honoring his late mom, LaQuita Bynum.
“I loved my mama so very much,” the former star of Bargain Blockbegan an emotional Instagram tribute on Sunday, May 10. “It’s been a few years since she passed, and she was a tricky person sometimes, but she taught me so much. My love of art and houses and creative things all came from her.”
Keith went on to note that the “last ten years of her life were so difficult for her,” adding, “She suffered under the weight of her own mind, and she never could accept how my life turned out, but I know somewhere in there she still loved me.”
He concluded his post by writing, “Hope you are all having a wonderful day with your mamas. Hug them if you can.”
Keith’s post featured several childhood photos of himself with his mother, father, Howard Bynum, and sister, Joni Bynum. The HGTV star also shared several solo snaps of LaQuita from over the years, as well as a most recent photo of himself with his parents.
Fans filled the post’s comments with messages of support. “I feel this. Life can be so complicated. Wishing you a good day as you remember your mom,” one user wrote. Another added, “Sweet, sweet tribute.” Someone else shared, “Sending love and light.”
A different person posted, “Yes life can be complicated and as a mom we think we know what we want for our children and it’s hard to just let them fly, but if we’ve done our job they’ll land on their feet, you are flying.”
A separate user commented, “Very nicely stated. Bravo to your Mom for your artistic talent!” Another stated, “I am sure she is smiling down on you and is so proud of the human you are – look for signs from her – they are all around.”
Per an online obituary, LaQuita died at the age of 63 in June 2022 and worked as a teacher in Texas for 27 years before retiring. Keith previously opened up about his complicated relationship with his family in an HGTV Pride Month video in 2021.
“I would look at [my partner] Evan [Thomas]‘ family to kind of find, like, some normalcy, some calmness, and just some love, because my family, it did not go well when I came out,” he shared. “They have essentially disowned me. I just kept working, and Evan kept helping, have me focus on what we love doing. And it got to a point now where I realize it’s their loss and it’s not gonna hold me back from having a fabulous life and being who I am.”
Keith and Thomas have been dating since 2013 and got engaged in 2017. LaQuita died one year after the couple launched their HGTV series Bargain Block, which concluded its four-season run in September.
Shortly before his mother’s death, Keith seemingly confirmed via Instagram that the two had made amends. “It’s never too late to start again. #lovemymama,” he captioned a May 2022 Instagram snap of himself holding his mother’s hand as she lay in bed.
