The mark of a good metal band name is its origin, the backstory. In-joke? Biblical reference? Satanic bible reference? Lord of the Rings reference? Dungeons & Dragons character? Count New Jersey prog death outfit Chronepsis in the latter category. And their debut, six-track mini-album, Weight of Eternity, is basically a D&D session in death metal form, replete with all the usual warriors and monsters. The quintet—Eric Cuffari (drums), Gavin Miele (bass), Torr Walker (rhythm guitar), Mike Kelliher (lead guitar), Chris Curtis (vocals)—set their battle tales to proggy, intense melodic DM with vocals that range from raw screeches to deep growls.

Weight of Eternity was written, recorded and produced by the band, while mixing and mastering was handled by Erik Johnson at Dark Prophet Audio. It will be self-released and available on signed CD and digitally on April 4. Place your preorder here.

A little information from the band regarding its name:

“Chronepsis is the dragon god of fate, death and judgment. The Watcher (as Chronepsis is known) observes a terrifying collection of stories, engulfed in horror, conquest, vengeance and transformation—tales of enraged warriors and hideous monsters from multiple realms.”
