Indianapolis doom crewVeilcasteare back withHellward, their fourth album in six years, later this week andDecibelhas an early sampling of the release for your early listening consumption.Hellwardrecalls the melodic side of doom, Cathedral and their ilk, mixed with the brooding anger of nastier sludge, like Crowbar and Eyehategod, and the quiet/loud intensity of post-metal.
Veilcaste approach doom in a way that’s heavy without losing its rocker tendencies. The music is often sonically despondent but the band never lose their sense of rhythm and motion (“Embedded,” “Chains,” “Worn in Stone”). There are moments of psychedelic melody that duel with the downtuned riffs and acoustic passages that feel as empty as vocalist Dustin Mendel’s emotive howls.
