Great Content, the debut album from Toronto-based tech-metal outfit Mirror Neuron, is an explosion of influences from across the extreme metal spectrum. In the press release, the band members describe their sound as taking influence from Between the Buried and Me, Krallice, His Hero is Gone and Anata, which is a pretty apt description.
Technically, Great Content is out on December 6, but Decibel has a full stream of the album early. Starting off hot with the chunky “Any Excuse to Hurt,” Mirror Neuron lead into “Interior Semiotics,” where the band’s chugging riffs meet dissonant, blackened leads. It’s an album highlight that they’ll quickly top with songs like “Even in Disgrace,” which will impress even the most jaded prog nerds.
Just when you think you’ve heard it all, Mirror Neuron bring things home with a wild one-two punch: moody, synth-driven interlude-esque track “The Past Has High Walls” and sprawling closer “Aspirational Violence,” which manages to condense the many ideas of Great Content into one 10-minute song.
