Pay particular attention to the excellent songwriting on “Anhela Odor Mortuorum (The Adepts),” “From Rotting Burial Shrouds,” and the glorious title track. The band’s sound has an inexplicable element of menace that emerges from their particular blend of the aforementioned classics,Grave, the secondCarcass album, some Finnish-style groove, and the slightest hints of funeral doom. We’re still in the first half of the year, but make sure to mark this on your list for when 2026 slithers into the grave.

Godthrymm – Projections
I like a lot of things aboutGodthrymm, but perhaps the vocals really do it for me. There’s a perfect raspy and gritting quality to Hamish’s voice that blends so well with Catherine’s harmonies. Clean vocals in this style require a strength and balance that maintains the epic feeling without becoming cheesy or overdone. Additionally, the band takes melodic doom metal and throws in powerful punches of thrash and death that keep things engaging. Dramatic, thrilling stuff.

Hecate Enthroned – The Corpse of a Titan, A Lament Long Buried
Speaking of drama, here’s the latest from Britain’s long-running symphonic institution. If you’re looking for soaring atmospheric black metal that still shows no mercy, look no further. Although the symphonic elements shine brightly, the album is mastered in a way that makes the guitars really loud — but still very crisp and measured.

Solid melodic blackened-death metal from Sweden. This is the band’s sixth album since their 2015 reunion.

Witching Hour – Descending … Where Time Has Ceased To Exist
Thrashy, blackish heavy metal from Germany, delivered via Dying Victims. So you know what you’re in for, some old-school madness with a modern sheen and dedication. Lots of great guitar-work here paired with strong vocals and fist-pumping rhythms. Horns up!
