Don’t Mention New Tool Record to Maynard

Metal

Tool have been hinting at new music lately, but don’t ask Maynard James Keenan about it. He’s not in the mood to talk.

The band haven’t put out music since Fear Inoculum in 2019, so folks have been asking what’s next. In a recent interview with Loudwire, Keenan was asked about the rumors that they would get into the studio, as mentioned by bassist Justin Chancellor earlier this month on The Vinyl Guide podcast. Chancellor mentioned that Tool hoped to get back in the studio next year to start recording. But Maynard says he doesn’t like to put the cart before the horse.

“I never mention anything until we actually have it in our hands because every time I say it out loud, it runs further away like Groundhog Day,” he says.

He even hinted that he might be upset with Chancellor for making these remarks. saying:

“To get people wound up and excited about something that doesn’t exist, I think it’s irresponsible.”

Sure, it’s irresponsible to promise too much to fans, especially when you’re on Tool’s level of fame, but simply saying the band hope to enter the studio next year doesn’t seem to be too specific. For Maynard, however, the details are apparently best left unsaid.

You can catch Tool at the remaining tour dates this year and early next—That much, we can tell you.
