Megadeth’s 1985 debut album Killing Is My Business…and Business is Good is widely considered one of metal’s great records. Now Dave Mustaine, in a new interview with Paraguay’s channel Trece (as reported on by Metal Injection), Mustaine says that the record was ahead of its time. When asked what his favorite Megadeath album, Mustaine was hesitant to pick a favorite, but named Peace Sells…but Who’s Buying as his favorite, but said that the band’s debut is special to him as well.
In the interview, Mustaine says:
“I think Killing Is My Business was so ahead of its time that people didn’t really understand it. And that’s when art is at its best, when you get something new that you’ve never heard before. When you hear a record and it’s just the same old crap, nobody wants that. I mean, how long has it been since we heard a new band that was really fantastic, like a new Iron Maiden or a new AC/DC or a new Megadeth or a new Guns N’ Roses. We haven’t heard a band like that in so long that was something that we stopped and went, ‘Wow. That’s great.’”
To say that the record is “ahead of its time” and that “people didn’t really understand it” would imply that the album went unappreciated in its own time, which isn’t the case at all. Killing Is My Business has always received mostly positive reviews since it was released in 1985, and even its commercial performance was pretty good, so what the hell is Mustaine talking about? Is this a backdoor pilot for Mustaine’s new YouTube series where he defends generally well-liked things for no reason? Is the next in the series going to be Mustaine saying shit like “People just don’t appreciate how good sex is”?
