Charlie Wilson has returned with “Superman,” his first proper single in a year, via P Music Group.
In “Superman,” Wilson sings about how his woman sees past his shortcomings, even when he feels inadequate. She supports and encourages him, knowing that he will always come through and save the day, as well as her heart.
Discussing the inspiration for “Superman,” Wilson explains, “This song is truly personal for me as it reflects on the love I have for my wife and the turning point that reshaped my entire life. After The Gap Band’s success, I struggled with homelessness and addiction. I entered rehab, meeting my future wife, a counselor at the facility.”
Wilson continues, “She put the cape on my back and we’ve been rollin’ ever since (28 years). This song is also for all women, their strength, love and support is appreciated more than they know.”

“Superman” is Wilson’s first single release in more than a year. He previously released his No. 1 hit “No Stoppin’ Us,” featuring Babyface, K-Ci Hailey and Johnny Gill.
The McFadden & Whitehead-sampled tune gave Wilson his ninth chart-topper on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart, extending his lead as the male artist with the most No. 1s.
It has not been revealed whether “Superman” or “No Stoppin’ Us” will bring Wilson any closer to releasing his anticipated studio album. His last studio album, In It to Win It, came out in 2017.
The launch of his upcoming album began in 2020 with “Forever Valentine,” a song he co-wrote and co-produced with Bruno Mars, and later that year with “One I Got.” Each topped the R&B charts.
Aside from his NPR Tiny Desk concert in June, in honor of Black Music Month, Wilson has been off-cycle, performing at major events this year, including the Jazz in the Gardens Music Festival and the Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom.
Wilson has two shows scheduled on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31 in Atlanta and Detroit before the end of the year.
These shows proceed a year of concerts and being recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024 as part of the class of 2023.
Wilson will be presented with his star on his 71st birthday (Jan. 29), according to his press agency.
In recent news, fans online, on social media, and on YouTube, are pushing for Wilson to be included in the official remix of Mary J. Blige’s “Still Believe in Love” featuring Vado. There is no confirmation whether this will happen yet.
