Blast Worship: Kuvotus – Decibel Magazine

Metal

Where they from?
Vaasa, Finland. In the past 10 days we have seen an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate, the Republican National Convention and the current President of the United States step down from the race for his re-election, but I’m here to talk about what really matters: the MLB all star game. Does anyone really need this shit anymore? Why not just name the rosters and then give everyone a four day break. It is the epitome of “this could have been an e-mail.” If I wanted to see a bunch of millionaires half-heartedly loaf around, pretending to give a shit, I’d just watch another political debate, thankyouverymuch.

Why the hype?
I first wrote about this band back in 2021 when their excellent and idiosyncratic blend of groove and grind caught my ear. A lot of bands try this same combination but for a reason I couldn’t quite put my finger on at the time, they just did it better and infinitely more memorably. Fast forward three years and I think I finally figured it out: The drumming really reminds me of Primus. I don’t know if this drummer in particular is a fan of the mighty Tim ‘Herb’ Alexander, but the way he plays around on the toms during his fills and breakdowns just smacks of Frizzle Fry. The band as a whole has a bit of a nü-metal swing on some of their songs and if that’s a turnoff for you, well then I’m sorry you don’t know how to experience joy, because for this proper late ’90s child it is simply AWESOME.

Latest Release?
Split EP with Vähäkyrö Drive-By, self-released. The other point of reference I would use for this band would be Maryland’s own Jarhead Fertilizer, themselves being avid devotees to the groove/grind combination. Kuvotus are a bit more European than them, employing just a slight bit of cartoonishness into their affairs that makes them, dare I say it, a bit fun. Yes, it is 2024 and grindcore bands are allowed to have FUN, goddammit. The world is collapsing in on itself, I think we are allowed a little oompa-beats once in a while.
