Alicia Keys Releases Stunning Video for ‘Lifeline’

R&B

Fresh off the release of The Color Purple soundtrack, Alicia Keys has released the official video for the lead single “Lifeline.”

Directed by Diane Martel, the video features Keys in her natural element behind a piano, wearing an all-eggshell-colored ensemble. Beauty shots of her are also included in the sequence.

Elsewhere, the video provides a vibrant preview of scenes from the upcoming musical adaptation of The Color Purple (more on that later).

As noted, “Lifeline” is lifted from The Color Purple (Music From and Inspired By) compilation and was released as the official first single on Nov. 27.

The uplifting anthem, written and co-produced by Keys, has made an impact on Mediabase’s Hot AC radio format.

As of now, it has reached No. 34. It also holds the No. 49 spot on R&B radio, which is currently led by Usher’s “Good Good” featuring Summer Walker and 21 Savage.

Fantasia, Usher, H.E.R., Mary J. Blige, Keyshia Cole, Halle Bailey, October London, Coco Jones, Jorja Smith and many more appear on the film’s soundtrack.

The Color Purple (Music From and Inspired By) soundtrack was executive produced by music legend Quincy Jones, Scott Sanders, and Larry Jackson. It is a prelude to the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, as well as the 2005 stage production by Marsha Norman. The movie is set to premiere in theaters across the U.S. on Christmas Day and globally on Jan. 18, 2024.

Fantasia reprises her role as Celie, while Danielle Brooks portrays Sophia. Taraji P. Henson (as Shug Avery), Colman Domingo (as Mister), Corey Hawkins (as Harpo), Halle Bailey (as young Nettie), Ciara (as adult Nettie), and H.E.R. (as Squeak) also star in the Blitz Bazawule-directed production.

Recently celebrating the 20th anniversary of her sophomore album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, the 15x Grammy-winning singer released a deluxe edition with nine bonus tracks. She performed a sold-out concert at Webster Hall in New York City, where she performed the entire album in honor of its 20-year milestone.

Additionally, Keys will bring her musical Hell’s Kitchen to Broadway on March 28, 2024, at the Shubert Theatre.

The show, based on Keys’ experience growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, will open on April 20. Tickets are already available for purchase, but the cast has not been announced yet.
