Panpsychism

From the blazing crucible of Pueblo, Colorado, death/thrash newcomers Panpsychism are out to make their presence known with Imperfect Mortality, their debut full-length recorded at Hahn Audio and produced, mixed, and mastered by Taylor Hahn.

Named after the philosophical idea that consciousness pervades all things, Panpsychism inject a similarly all-consuming intensity into their sound—a blend of razorwire riffing, rhythmic whiplash, and existential scrutiny. Today, Decibel premieres “Imperfect Contrition,” one of the album’s first public offerings and a ferocious mission statement from a band that clearly didn’t come to play it safe.

“It was one of those beautiful songs where all the pieces seemed to fall exactly into place,” the band tells Decibel. “We were jamming it, and one of us would say, ‘Let’s do this here!’ or ‘Hey, I have something that would sound killer here!’”

The lyrics cut as deep as the riffs. Rather than swing blindly at religion, Panpsychism drills into a specific tenet—imperfect contrition—and its reliance on fear-based repentance.

“When I sat down to write lyrics for it, I decided to give my opinion on religion (original I know), but talk about something within it I’d never really heard someone talking about,” they explain. “Rather than saying overall if it was good or bad, I decided to pinpoint a certain aspect of it that I thought was hypocritical and self-centered. In my mind, imperfect contrition within religion is based in fear, not love. And in my humble opinion, no choice should be based in fear nor form of extortion, but made in love, reason, and true passion.”

For fans of early Revocation, The Crown, or Witchery at their most dialed-in and dangerous, “Imperfect Contrition” is a welcome jolt—furious, focused, and smarter than your average anti-doctrine screed. If this is Panpsychism just getting started, it’s time to pay close attention.
