This week, Zoe Ko released her latest single “Lucky.” It’s a razor-sharp dark pop song with a New York edge.
Ko may live in Los Angeles now, but she still prefers black clothes and doesn’t mind getting dirty.
We met up with the singer-songwriter in LA for a photoshoot and interview about her music.
How did you develop your rock sound? Were you in bands first?
To be honest I don’t totally know. I listened to basically every genre ever growing up, and sang and wrote lots of different genres. Rock is kinda a new thing for me. But when I finally started writing and singing and performing it, everything finally just clicked!
What’s your favorite lyric from one of your songs?
“Put some mud inside my purse” because I really confused the girlies with that one. And just seeing the discourse and confusion it caused gives me a good laugh almost daily.
What producer would you love to work with?
Of course Dan Nigro! That man is a musical emotional genius.
What song pumps you up?
Any 2000’s hit song. Especially recently “Lip Gloss,” “My Humps,” “Shut Up and Drive,” and “Telephone.”
What’s your favorite breakup song?
“Telephone” by Lady Gaga or “Good Puss” by Cobrah. I don’t cry that much after breakups. I just dance a lot and act really slutty.
How would you describe your personal style?
This one girl on TikTok said it best, “…it’s like leather, cheetah print, dark red, tortoise shell glasses, boots, shorts, and it’s giving city girl cigarette I’m poor but I’m rich.”
Who or what influenced it?
The badass NYC grandmas who wore the c*ntiest outfits and thrift stores! Can I say Pinterest? Because saving a thousand pins everyday did a lot!
What would your career path be if you weren’t making music?
I honestly don’t know! I have a thousand hobbies and random skills because of it that I could see so many things. But probably doing some kind of animal rescue work!
We just interviewed Emi Grace. Is she a good roommate?
Hahaha OMG this is too funny! Yes, she’s the best roomie. I love living with my best friends. So it’s pretty cute and amazing. We still need to put up decorations though. Tell her to help me hang up the gallery wall this weekend for me, please!
