Leon Thomas Readies New Album, Shares First Single ‘Mutt’

R&B

Leon Thomas has officially launched a new era of music.

The Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer has released “Mutt,” the first single from his upcoming second album on EZMNY Records/Motown Records.

Produced by D. Phelps and Freaky Rob, “Mutt” finds Thomas ready to take a chance on a new love. He’s aware of how vulnerable the journey is, but is willing to try, even if he ends up having his heart broken.

“I have smoked already, so pardon my bluntness / I see past pretty faces, so I got trouble trusting / But I’ll let my guard down for you,” he sings.

“Mutt” is Thomas’ first song released as a lead artist since his “Crash & Burn (Remix)” with Blxst, which was released in October 2023. The original version of the track appears on Thomas’ debut album, Electric Dusk, released Aug. 18, 2023

Electric Dusk included the singles “X-Rated” featuring Benny The Butcher, “Love Jones” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, who is the head of EZMNY, and “Breaking Point.” Thomas released a remix of the latter song featuring Victoria Monét in summer 2023.

When asked what he hopes listeners take away from Electric Dusk, Thomas told Rated R&B, “I want people to understand how human I am. There’s so many examples of me in very shiny situations. I think the distortion, both visually and sonically, is to genuinely show how much growth has happened over these years, how painful growth can be [and] how beautiful growth can be.”

He added, “I want people to see me [and] hear me. It’s kind of hard to do through the voice of other artists that I write and produce for. This album was a really great example of me laying it out all out on the floor and hoping that people understand where I’m coming from. I want people to listen with open ears and open minds because I’m definitely taking some chances on this one.”

Since Electric Dusk, Thomas has been busy collaborating with other artists. This year, he teamed with British singer Elmiene on his “Sweetness (Remix),” producer ESTA on “Dangerous Game” from his debut album, Francis, and melodic rapper Yung Bleu on “Is There Something New?” from his album Jeremy.

Additionally, Leon Thomas co-produced “Forever Rolling” and “Slide” from Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s joint album, Vultures 2

Thomas will join Blxst as a special guest on his I’ll Always Come Find You Tour. The North American launches Oct. 11 at House of Blues in Houston. Thomas will make stops in New Orleans, Orlando, Atlanta, Charlotte, Boston and New York, to name a few cities.

Thomas’ stint on the tour will conclude Oct. 26 at The Fillmore in Detroit.
