EP Stream: Cantankerous Canadians Culled Dig Into Our Psyches with Psycles

Metal

We first introduced you to Alberta’s Culled back in 2018 on the eve of the release of their debut Thin the Herd, Fail to Learn here. Featuring ex-and-current members of Disciples of Power and Wake getting in touch with both sides of the velocity continuum via the grit and grime of Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer and Nasum, the band’s second release — unless you really want to count their pandemic release of them covering “You Suffer” — is about to clobber all and sundry tomorrow.

Entitled Psycles, the band’s newest is a five-song EP that sees the quartet expanding their sonic wingspan with some of the longest and most dynamic songs of their canon rubbing crusty and grease-stained shoulders with punchy sub-two minute ragers. As well, Psycles sees them making a shift from blatant political call-outs to an exploration of the current state of our collective consciousness. All of which you can experience for yourself via a stream of it below. Says the band about their latest offering:

“We are honoured and humbled that Decibel Magazine is debuting the exclusive full stream of our upcoming EP Psycles. We are very proud of this release and have poured our collective energies into it. Psycles is a departure from our debut release Thin the Herd, Fail to Learn and is a natural evolution of our music with increased intensity and complexity, while retaining our core approach of contrasting impactful doom/sludge filled riffs with the chaotic speed and the ferocity of grindcore. Thematically, Psycles touches on the literature of fellow Canadian Dr. Gabor Maté and his focus on society’s collective trauma. We are all complicit in its propagation, furthering harm and doomed to suffer in the current societal landscapes. We truly hope you enjoy listening to Psycles and can hear the passion we harnessed in its creation. Take the messages and emotions of the soundscapes to help you through dark times and motivate you to push forward with empathy and understanding, to others as well as yourself, so that we can all find community and overcome our collective traumas and prevent them for future generations.”

Who dares to say all of us extreme music types are heartless sociopaths?
