Philly sludge purveyors Caged will release their monstrous debut album, From Roving About the Earth, on September 29 via Translation Loss. Though sludge is the core of what Caged do, From Roving About the Earth also features notes of death metal, punk, noise and hardcore, all of which you can hear featured prominently on new track “The Messiah Draws Near.”

Starting with noise that builds into a doomy intro, Caged then dip into Incantation-esque death metal and upbeat punk energy that merge with their heavy sludge approach. As the title suggests, the new song was inspired by formative experiences with religion,

“The OG Michael Myers for me as a kid,” says singer John Jones about Jesus, the Messiah. “The one always watching us in judgement, threatening to make his triumphant return to earth via apocalypse. Be ready to repent or ready to die. The song both celebrates the idea of futility while also being somewhat inspirational. The saying goes if you back a dog in a corner it will bite. Sometimes we’re at our most productive when everything is taken away and nothing is left.”

The Messiah’s arrival is delayed until next month but you can hear the new song below.
