R&B

“Poison,” the first single from Aaliyah’s upcoming posthumous album has been released via Blackground Records 2.0/EMPIRE. It includes the late singer’s unreleased vocals paired with The Weeknd’s signature falsetto tone.

Produced by Mike Dean, “Poison” details a toxic relationship that is fading away. “I’ve given my heart, my joy, my soul to you / If it is real, I sure can’t see / Gotta start lookin’ out for me,” sings Aaliyah.

The Weeknd sings on the chorus, “You’re so cold, I can’t see your breath, I swear / And they told me not to fall in love / Wondering where it all went wrong / You were my poison all along.”

Before “Poison” made it was to streaming services, it was released to radio stations. In fact, it was the most added song at R&B radio this week with 27 adds.

In an interview with Billboard, Barry Hankerson, head of Blackground Records, shared that Aaliyah’s forthcoming album will include features from Chris Brown, Drake, Ne-Yo, Snoop Dogg and more.
