Bassist Justin Chancellor (Tool) and drummer Aric Improta (Fever 333, Night Verses) have teamed up for a new song, “EXU.”
Spin says the collaboration came about after Improta, inspired by the phantasmagoric Panos Cosmatos’ films Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) and Mandy (2018), built an infinity room during the lockdown. He then enlisted Chancellor use that infinity room to inspire a new track.
For his part, Chancellor asked Improta to see Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon before the collaboration began — a considerably-less hallucinogenic film than the ones by Cosmatos. Which explains why “EXU” sounds like it could be the score for an LSD-fueled action movie. If Cosmatos ever does choose to make a kung-fu flick and doesn’t get these guys to do the music, he’s fool.
(I’m kidding. Cosmatos will never make a kung-fu flick.)
Says Improta in a statement:
“Justin is honestly one of the most open-minded artists I’ve worked
with, and all of his ideas were distinctly unique,” Improta said. “I’d say those are the 2 qualities I hold in the highest regard when working with musicians, so it made the process that much more rewarding.”
