I’m not going to pretend that I’m intimately familiar with all the names mentioned on the list of influences when Anthers cracks off with “Gilla Band, Metz, Bjork, Mandy Indiana, Psychotic Monks, Geneviève Castrée, Holy Fuck, DJ Alice, At the Drive-In, Exotica, Carpenter Brut, The Simpsons, and I Think You Should Leave.” But the Seattle-based trio that, like so many other bands, formed during the COVID lockdowns have certainly come out swinging on their debut album, Pedigree Pig. The album, which actually was released last week, is an amalgam of blistering noise rock, power electronic violence, the thumping rhythmic pulse of gentlemanly bare knuckle boxing and a wall of distortion unsettling enough to drive loose fillings through the backside of your brain.
Today, we present a premiere of the band’s latest video, the scratchy, strobospheric expulsion of black-and-white-hot energy representing “Mabel,” the album’s lead-off track. Says drummer Taylor Clark about the vid: “The video for ‘Mabel’ was our attempt to capture the energy and intensity of our live show as well as a visual representation of how we write music. Like many of our songs, this video started as an idea for a texture. We built on that idea, incorporating lighting, speed effects and distortion until there was enough going on visually that the video itself could be really simple and something we could make ourselves. Our bass player Kevin [Blanquies] is a lighting designer by trade and we were lucky enough to get to film at Neumos in Seattle with full use of their light rig. In order to accomplish the frequent cuts in the video, we recruited a few friends to help get multiple angles in a single take, allowing us to get all 38 shots in a day.”
Pedigree Pig is out now. Info and purchase points here, here and here.
Seattle folks, or those visiting, can witness the band live on November 2nd @ Clockout Lounge w/ Dion Lunadon (formerly of A Place to Bury Strangers).
