Video Premiere: Pyres – ‘Some, Not All, Came Back’

Toronto sludge crew Pyres have taken a long journey to get to their second album, Yun. The follow-up to their last release, first album Year of Sleep in 2013, Yun is a testament to Pyres’ resilience, the band overcoming grief, lineup changes and a years long hibernation to get to this point. Yun will officially be released on March 7 via Hypaethral Records but you can get the next taste of the album today via new track “Some, Not All, Came Back.”

“’Some, Not All, Came Back’ is a sort of variation on and interpretation of the expression ‘the abyss gazes also,’” explains frontman Andrew Wilson. “My late father, who was a fundamentally decent man, nevertheless had mental health issues that followed him through life and therefore have left their mark on me as well. The perspective being receiving a message from my father in the afterlife, warning me that his mania will come for me in the end as well.

“The title itself is meant to convey that as one travels through life and experiences traumatic moments, not all of the pieces that make up the whole person may remain intact. In other words, when we live through dark times, the darkness takes what it will, and only some parts of us ever really come back.

“The song reinforces one of the many ideas behind YUN, this concept of repressed emotions and ‘storing’ or ‘accumulating’ trauma.”
