Victoria Monét is now a three-time Grammy Award winner. The singer and songwriter took home awards in different fields, including the coveted General Field.
At the premiere ceremony, held before the main telecast, Monét won Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for her debut album, JAGUAR II. She shares the award with John Kercy, Kyle Mann, Patrizio “Teezio” Pigliapoco, Neal H Pogue, and Todd Robinson, who are also credited as engineers.
In the R&B Field, Monét’s JAGUAR II scooped up an award for Best R&B Album. The stacked category included Babyface’s Girls Night Out, Coco Jones’ What I Didn’t Tell You (Deluxe), Emily King’s Special Occasion and Summer Walker’s CLEAR 2: SOFT LIFE EP.
During the telecast, hosted by Trevor Noah, Monét took home the Best New Artist award. In her emotional acceptance speech, Monet talked about the trials and tribulations of her journey in music.
“This award was a 15 year pursuit,” said Monét. “I moved to LA in 2009 and I like to liken myself to a plant who was planted. You can look at the music industry as soil. It can be looked at as dirty, or it can be looked at as a source of nutrients and water. My roots have been growing underneath the ground unseen for so long. I feel like today I am sprouting finally above ground.”
Monét also took a moment to thank her team for believing in her when others didn’t. “I’d like to thank my team of visionaries who could see through that soil.”
Monet was nominated for seven awards at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Her other nods included Record of the Year (“On My Mama“), Best R&B Performance (“How Does It Make You Feel”), Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Hollywood”) and Best R&B Song (“On My Mama”).
Circling back to JAGUAR II, the album was released Aug. 25, 2023, via RCA Records. It debuted at No. 6 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart, with 15,000 equivalent units sold in the first week. It marked Monét’s first top 10 on that chart.
Monét supported her critically acclaimed album on her sold-out JAGUAR Tour.
In other news, Monét is nominated in six categories at the 2024 NAACP Image Awards, including Outstanding Female Artist. The ceremony airs live Saturday, March 16, at 8 p.m. on BET and CBS.
