Tyla’s Breakout Single ‘Water’ Goes Platinum

R&B

Tyla is already making a splash with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The South African singer’s breakout single “Water” is now certified platinum for selling over one million equivalent units. It marks Tyla’s first-ever RIAA award.

“Water,” an Ampiano-meets-R&B smash, is currently No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated Jan. 20. The Sammy Soso-produced track is in its 15th week on the popular singles chart.

On Spotify, “Water” has amassed more than 338 million streams. It’s Tyla’s most-streamed song on the platform, where she currently has 30 million monthly listeners.

“Water” was released in July 2023 via FAX Records/Epic Records. In November, she enlisted her labelmate Travis Scott for the official “Water (Remix),” which has 24.5 million streams on Spotify at the time of publication. She also teamed with Marshmello for another remix, nearing eight million streams on Spotify.

“Water” is the lead single from Tyla’s upcoming self-titled debut album, out March 1. The highly awaited album will also include her recently shared tracks “Truth or Dare, “Butterflies” and “On and On.”

Circling back to “Water,” the song is nominated for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammy Awards, which airs Sunday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Speaking on the inspiration behind her album title, Tyla explained to Zane Lowe of Apple Music: “For now, my introduction to the world, I just wanted to be clean, Tyla. I want people to get to know my name and get to know my sound because my first project is going to be Tyla in music form. So, I felt like self-titled would’ve been the best way to go.”
