Formed during the pandemic’s isolation, Pennsylvanian rabble rousers Boozewa return to disrupt your week with a new song. Featuring Jessica Baker (bass, hollering) and Mike Cummings (drums, hollering) of Backwoods Payback, Boozewa are a heavy swig of good-times grunge with a sludgy hangover. Over the last few years they bashed out a series of demos and EPs in the rock ‘n’ roll dungeon they call a basement. But “Maybe I’m a Bird” is the trio’s first song recorded with a studio’s polish.
Driven by Ryan Caspar’s crunchy guitars and the rumble of Baker’s bass, “Maybe I’m a Bird” is a hot-blooded party bop. Chantable gang vocals swell over a thunderous dance beat for mosh-pit groovin’. In this music video directed by Cummings, animated approximations of the Boozewa members take turns emulating a feathered friend. Imagine the tragic flight of Icarus channeled through South Park‘s animation style.
“Every day you have to go to work and there’s that one person there,” Boozewa share in a statement. “That one person that’s always giving you a hard time. Always with the stink eye. Always checking their watch to see if you were a minute late. We all know them. They are everywhere. When you see them tomorrow, make eye contact with them. Don’t break it. And let them know, ‘HEY! You don’t know me. Maybe I’m A Bird!’”
