The Weeknd Responds to Ill-Timed Tweet Amid Russia-Ukraine Crisis

The Weeknd had some of the worst timing when he sent out tweets in excitement about an apparent new tour when explosions were going off in Ukraine.

The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, addressed the ill-timed series of tweets in a social media post two hours after the exciting tweets. “Unfortunately, I’m just now seeing what’s happening with the conflict and will pause on tomorrow’s announcement. I pray for everyone’s safety,” he wrote.

On Thursday (Feb. 24), Tesfaye posted a number of updates in anticipation of a big announcement coming on Friday.

He tweeted “LET’S GOOOOOOOO,” along with a single earth emoji. He later added, “It’s finally here! It’s time… TOMORROW!!!” and “What a journey we’re finally here.”

At almost the same time his tweets were posted, Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly announced that there was a “special military operation” taking place in the east of Ukraine.

Directly after Putin’s speech, explosions took place near Kharkiv, Kramatorsk and Mariupol along with the capital of Ukraine, Kiev.

Obviously, his tweets were just posted at the wrong moment and he seemingly wasn’t actively paying attention to the news at the time until social media users began reacting to his posts.

“The Weeknd tweeting like he set up World War 3,” one user wrote. Others shared memes of the world imploding while The Weeknd is tweeting.
