Taylor Swift says she’s “completely in shock” after hearing the news of a fatal mass stabbing in Southport, U.K. on Monday (July 29).
The tragedy took place at a Swift-themed dance party and yoga class geared toward children, resulting in multiple injuries and three deaths.
On Monday, Meyerside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy confirmed that two children had died; the following morning, police announced that there had been a third fatality. The deceased children were six, seven and nine years old.
As information continues to roll out about the incident, Swift hopped on social media to share her horror and sadness in response to the news.
“The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously, and I’m just completely in shock,” the singer writes in an Instagram Story. “The loss of life and innocence, and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families and first responders.
“These were just little kids at a dance class,” Swift continues. “I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”
People reports that police have confirmed that a 17-year-old male suspect from Cardiff was arrested in connection with the stabbing. He was arrested for suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Authorities also state that they “seized a knife” in connection with the tragedy.
As of Tuesday morning, five children remained in critical condition, with eight injuries reported in total. Additional police statements reveal that no other suspects are being sought in connection with the crime, and that “the incident is not currently being treated as terror-related.”
