Grammy winner SZA has earned her third No. 1 hit at Mainstream Top 40 radio, with “Snooze” rising from No. 3 to the top spot.
It’s her second solo No. 1 on this format this year, following “Kill Bill,” which also topped the rhythmic radio chart.
SZA kicked off her No. 1 career on Mainstream Top 40 with her award-winning track with Doja Cat, “Kiss Me More,” before releasing the solo triumphs.
“Snooze,” certified 2x multi-platinum (two million equivalent units sold), is the current single from SZA’s hit album, SOS. Mainstream Top 40 aside, it went to the summit at rhythmic and urban radio.
On Billboard, SZA makes advancement with “Snooze,” as it climbs to No. 2 on the Pop Airplay chart the week dated Oct 21, 2023.
This past summer, the song topped several Billboard charts, including Hot R&B Songs, Rhythmic Airplay and R&B Digital Song Sales. It also peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“Snooze’ spent 11 weeks atop the Hot R&B Songs chart.
In August, SZA released a maxi-single that featured the original version of the song, both explicit and clean, as well as a sped-up version and an instrumental. Later on, she also released an acoustic version of the song with Justin Bieber.
In the official music video directed by Bradley J. Calder, Bieber appears as SZA’s love interest. The video has been viewed 23 million times on YouTube.
Meanwhile, “Snooze” has garnered over 546 million streams on Spotify.
“Snooze” was co-produced by Babyface, Khris Riddick-Tynes, Leon Thomas and BLK. In a December 2022 interview with Rated R&B, Thomas discussed his involvement with “Snooze.”
“Me and my production partner Khris [Riddick-Tynes] were super nervous. SZA popped through, and she was so nice. I had met her before, but this was a great reintroduction to her new world of music,” Thomas shared.
“I’m glad that I was able to collaborate with such strong creators. We also worked with this kid name BLK out of Scotland. He sent some parts in. The whole thing came together really fast. She wrote [“Snooze”] in an hour. We weren’t sure if she was going to use it, so it’s a super blessing.”
Thomas discussed the growing popularity of “Snooze” during a follow-up with Rated R&B after releasing his debut album, Electric Dusk.
“I’m big on gratitude. I try to wake up grateful regardless of if there’s a No. 1 hit or not. But to be completely frank, I’ve been really happy about it. It’s something that makes me smile every time I see new goals that that song has reached,” Thomas commented.
He added, “SZA is an amazing person and a phenomenal artist. She’s always been somebody on my bucket list to work with. To have a song with her, period, was an amazing thing. To see it get flowers and a successful response was like a dream come true.”
Circling back to SZA, she is currently on a nationwide tour in support of her hit singles and her blockbuster album, SOS. The album shattered records for the most weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart.
