SZA has fulfilled her musical promise. The Grammy-winning star has released SOS Deluxe: LANA, an extended version of her sophomore album.
The deluxe set includes all the tracks from her groundbreaking second LP plus 15 bonus tracks, including the Grammy-nominated “Saturn” and the recently shared “Drive.” The latter song was produced by ThankGod4Cody and Billy Lemon.
The new batch of tracks also includes a feature from her longtime collaborator Kendrick Lamar, who appears on “30 For 30.”
SOS Deluxe: LANA arrives two years after SOS, which was released Dec. 9, 2022, via Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA Records.
The latter album opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 318,000 equivalent units sold. According to Billboard, SOS also had the biggest streaming week ever for an R&B album, with 404.58 million on-demand streams, and the second-largest streaming week in history for an album by a female artist.
SOS featured hits like “Good Days,” “I Hate U,” “Kill Bill,” “Snooze,” and “Ghost in the Machine” with Phoebe Bridgers. The latter two tracks won trophies at the 66th Grammy Awards. “Snooze” was crowned Best R&B Song, while “Ghost in the Machine” was awarded Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. At the same ceremony, SOS won Best Progressive R&B Album.
In August 2023, SOS was certified to 3x platinum by the RIAA, with three million units sold. Further, every track from SOS has been certified gold or higher.
Since releasing SOS, SZA embarked on her sold-out SOS Tour, which grossed $95.5 million, according to Billboard.
SZA first teased her deluxe project at an album celebration event in Brooklyn in September 2023. “So the deluxe is like a whole ‘nother album, and it’s called LANA. It’s seven to 10 songs, and it’ll be out this fall,” she told the crowd in a fan-captured video.
In her December 2024 cover story for British Vogue, SZA opened up more about the direction she took with LANA. “I think I am making music from a more beautiful place. From a more possible place versus a more angsty place,” she said.
“I’m not identifying with my brokenness. It’s not my identity. It’s shit that happened to me. Yeah, I experienced cruelty. I have to put it down at some point. Piece by piece, my music is shifting because of that, the lighter I get.”
On Monday (Dec. 16), SZA confirmed the release date for LANA in an Instagram post of a snippet from a video for “Drive/Crybaby,” starring actor Ben Stiller. The nighttime clip showed Stiller alone in his car, lip-syncing to the track.
The following day (Dec. 17), SZA posted a second clip from the video. “SEVERANCE SEASON TWO OUT JANUARY 17th,” she wrote in the caption. “DELUXE (Lana)12.20.24 THANK YOU @benstiller.” (Stiller serves as executive producer and director for Apple TV+‘s Emmy-winning thriller series.)
SZA will support LANA on her co-headlining Grand National Tour with Kendrick Lamar. The highly-anticipated tour kicks off April 19, 2025, at U.S. Bank Stadium and will wrap up June 18 at Northwest Stadium in Washington, D.C.
Lamar will be supporting his latest album, GNX, which includes two guest appearances from SZA: “Luther” and “Gloria.”
In other SZA news, she stars in the upcoming comedic film alongside Keke Palmer, One of Them Days, which hits theaters Jan. 17, 2025. (The film was originally slated to premiere Jan. 24. However, it was moved up a week.)
Circling back to LANA, multiple fan bundles are available for sale on SZA’s official website.
