When he isn’t busy with Napalm Death, extreme music legend Shane Embury keeps himself busy with other projects—Brujeria, Lock Up, Venomous Concept and his electronic music project, Dark Sky Burial. Having released four full-lengths and a couple of EPs since 2020, Dark Sky Burial has become an increasingly experimental project, a tendency that comes to a head on new album Solve Et Coagula, marking what Embury describes as the “last part of the Maze Quadrilogy.”

In addition to serving as the conclusion to the quadrilogy Dark Sky Burial began four albums ago (and the second album called Solve Et Coagula to be featured on Decibel this week), Solve Et Coagula is also the most collaborative release Embury has made since beginning the project. The album features four songs that Embury recorded with Sigh bassist/vocalist Mirai Kawashima in 2005, 15 years before the conception of Dark Sky Burial.

“This album took some time!” Embury tells Decibel. “With all I have been up to and through emotionally this past year, certainly my recent experience on the road with Jaz Coleman [Killing Joke], influenced my musical and spiritual growth further on this record. What was an extra bonus was also integrating four tracks I composed with Mirai Kawashima of Sigh way back in Japan in 2005 when I was visiting my future wife! How seamlessly these tracks fit into the album… stay tuned for the future folks as it’s gonna start get heavier and wilder from here on in!”

With all that in mind, listen to lead single “The Jewel in the Toad’s Head” now. Solve Et Coagula is out on July 18 and you can pre-order it here.
