Roy Woods’ New Album Is Full of ‘Mixed Emotions’

R&B

Alternative R&B singer-songwriter Roy Woods has returned with his sophomore album, Mixed Emotions, via OVO Sound.

The 17-track project includes the previously shared songs “Touch You,” “Insecure,” “Bad Bad,” “Don’t Love Me,” “Young Boy Problems,” “Don’t Mind Me” and “Test What I Know.”

On Mixed Emotions, Woods takes listeners on a winding journey, as he unpacks the intricacies of love and life. He addresses his shortcomings (“Made Mistakes”), holds up his own red flags (“Don’t Love Me”), shrugs off haters (“Hate Me” featuring Coi Leray), copes with a haunting breakup (“Unsettling”) and grapples with disloyalty (“Thought It Was You”).

Mixed Emotions isn’t solely introspective. Songs like “Dime” and “That Thang” featuring Jada Kingdom are upbeat and flirty enough to get bodies moving on the dancefloor.

Regarding his new album, Woods shares, “This release is very special to me. I put my heart, soul, and real-life experiences into it, especially with me taking a hiatus for so long. My fans deserve this. It’s only up from here. Enjoy the album.”

Mixed Emotions is the follow-up to the Toronto native’s debut album, Say LessThe latter project was released in 2017 and featured appearances from PARTYNEXTDOOR, 24hrs, dvsn and PnB Rock.

Say Less debuted at No. 11 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart.

In between his debut and sophomore efforts, Woods released his Dem Times EP in 2020.
