Review: “Everything is Possible” By Randy Edelman and Grandmaster Melle Mel By Edmund Barker

Hip Hop

The new song “Everything is Possible” is a collaboration by two musical legends from different fields. Randy Edelman, who I have had the pleasure of interviewing previously, is a multifaceted composer and singer known for soundtracks such as Ghostbusters II and Gettysburg, as well as for contributing songs to the likes of Barry Manilow and Patti LaBelle. Grandmaster Melle Mel, meanwhile, is the iconic namesake and front man of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who brought rap to new heights with the 1982 classic “The Message” (which is still being sampled in pop today, like on Coi LeRay’s “Players.”).

The new song is actually a reworked version of a track of the same name from Randy’s 1985 solo record Switch of the Seasons. The original version, with Randy’s voice immersed in a warm bath of ambient synths, is a call to not give up or fade away amidst life’s hardships, a message with tons of relevance years later. The 2023 version, courtesy of Trax Records, gives it a new beat and new verses by Grandmaster Melle Mel fitting with the theme of soldiering through rough patches in life. The two artists’ talents combine to make “Everything is Possible” a powerful ode to hanging ok for another day in this crazy world.
