Muni Long is back. The Grammy winner has returned with “Made for Me,” her first proper single in a year, via Supergiant Records/Def Jam Recordings. Long co-wrote the track with Jermaine Dupri, Bryan-Michael Cox and Jordan XL.
Nostalgic and sickly sweet, “Made For Me” is a tender piano ballad where Long expresses her love for her partner, whom she refers to as a twin, and affirms their compatibility.
“Nobody knows me like you do / Nobody don’t love me quite like you can / Can’t even deny it / Every time I try it / One look in my eyes, you know I’m lying,” Long sings.
Long was first seen in the studio with Cox and Dupri in May 2023. The session also included Grammy-winning songwriter and producer, Johntá Austin.
“The last few days me @therealjohntaaustin and @bryanmichaelcox been in the studio with @munilong and we coming for all the radio slots,” Dupri wrote on Instagram.
“Made for Me” is Long’s first single since releasing her 2022 debut album, Public Displays of Affection: The Album. The LP includes the hit single ‘Hrs & Hrs,” which climbed to No. 1 on urban radio and Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
The love anthem, also certified platinum by the RIAA, won Best R&B Performance at the 65th Grammy Awards earlier this year. It also was nominated for Best R&B Song, while Long was up for Best New Artist.
Public Displays of Affection: The Album also included previously shared songs “Another” and “Baby Boo” featuring Saweetie. The former track earned Long a top 10 at urban radio, while the Saweetie collaboration did well on the format.
Late in 2022, Public Displays of Affection: The Album was among Rated R&B’s 30 Best R&B Albums of 2022 list.
“Nobody could have predicated that a rebrand and a hit single would have made Long an overnight sensation. But never giving up on your dreams is the true victor here,” wrote Rated R&B’s Antwane Folk about the album.
Long continued promotion of her debut album with a Vevo performance of “Butterfly Effect.” She also released an official remix of “Hrs & Hrs” featuring R&B mainstay Usher.
In the interim of releasing solo music, Long made a feature appearance on Alex Vaughn’s “IYKYK,” lifted from The Hurtbook: Homegirl Pack.
She also teamed up with OG Parker for “Still Work” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Kodak Black, NLE Choppa, JVKE and Jimin for “Angel, Pt. 1.”
The latter collaboration was lifted from the official Fast X soundtrack. It reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Digital Songs Sales chart.
