Legendary band Meanstreak, the “Real Housewives of Heavy Metal,” reunited in 2022 and were the supporting act for John Petrucci’s recent solo tour. Now, the reunited Meanstreak have announced their first reunion album, a new EP due out February 2nd called Blood Moon, which in no way sounds like it should actually be the title of a concept album about periods.
Meanstreak may joke about being Real Housewives, and they may be brought up on metal trivia nights as the band with three members who are married to members of Dream Theater, but don’t define Meanstreak by who they’re married to. Founded in 1985 by guitarists Marlene Portnoy and Rena Sands Petrucci, the five-piece from Westchester, New York hold the distinction of being one of the first all-female thrash metal bands in the heavily macho genre.
Petrucci, explains what sparked the band’s reunion:
“We realized this Meanstreak reunion had to happen when we had a zoom party during the pandemic. We weren’t sure if it would go over after 28 years apart but during a 2-month US tour, the crowds were overwhelmingly supportive and gave us the strength and determination to finish our Blood Moon EP and continue our never-ending journey. We can’t wait to get on the road again and share our new material with our amazing fans!!! “
Bassist Martens Myung seems to be equally excited about the band’s reunion and their new material:
“Meanstreak musically is heavy, melodic, and fun, like hanging out with your besties head banging, singing, and screaming at the top of your lungs on your way to a great concert. So proud of our new music and can’t wait for the world to hear!!!”
With the announcement of the new album, Meanstreak also released the first single “Giant Speaks.” Blood Moon EP drops on February 2 from Step Off Records and ONErpm.
