Emerging singer Maeta has unleashed a visual for “Habits,” the title track to her latest EP.
Co-directed by Zemia and Alexis ZA, the video was inspired by Netflix’s original film Malcom & Marie starring Zendaya and John David Washington. In the visual, Maeta and her part-time lover find themselves enjoying each other’s company at his home.
“I’m excited to share this music video with the world finally! I think everyone can relate to this video and song. You know a person isn’t good for you but it’s hard to leave them alone because the attraction and vibes are so good for the moment,” Maeta shared in a statement. “But I wanted to focus more on those sweet moments and not the negative side of the relationship.”
Zemia and Alexis ZA added, “After hearing Maeta’s perspective on the song and how balanced she wanted the video to be, we decided to flip Malcolm & Marie on its head and our original idea was much more somber. Though we still experience the emotional depth of this relationship, we primarily live in a world of suspended joy and ephemerality.”
Maeta released her Habits EP last April via Roc Nation Records. The seven-track project features appearances from Leven Kali, Buddy and Beam. In October 2021, Maeta appeared on Tone Stith’s song “Something in the Water” from his EP, Still FWM. She also teamed up with Rini for his song “Over Some Wine” from his debut album, Constellations. She closed out the year with her lovely remake of Don Toliver’s “Swangin’ On Westheimer.”
