Khalid has returned with his new single, “Please Don’t Fall in Love With Me,” produced by Jason Kellner and Denis Kosiak.
On the melancholic track, which samples Alicia Keys’ “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready),” Khalid laments about an ex-lover he can’t shake off.
Lyrically, the song delves into the complex emotions felt after a breakup: betrayal (“The fact that I actually started to trust you”), insecurity (“I bet you ain’t told him the things that we been through”), heartache (“Then you broke my heart, somеone bring me a tissue”), and resentment (“He can’t even match it, he’s not in my bracket”).
Though Khalid has attempted to move on, he has trouble connecting with others romantically. With Khalid singing in the chorus, “So please don’t fall in love with me,” it feels like a warning to a potential partner that he’s not in the right space and a barrier to guard his shattered heart.
“Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me” is the first single from Khalid’s third album, which will release later this year via RCA Records.
“The last few years consisted of me working diligently on what I presume to be my best and most personal album yet,” says Khalid. “I’ve spent an unhealthy amount of time in the studio working with some of my favorite creatives just to deliver this amazing body of work and now I finally get to share a piece of me in my new era with my day one fans!”
Khalid’s upcoming album will follow 2019’s Free Spirit, which included hits like “Better” and “Talk” featuring Disclosure.
Following Free Spirit, the El Paso, Texas, native returned in 2021 with his EP, Scenic Drive (The Tape), featuring appearances from Alicia Keys, Ari Lennox, 6LACK, Lucky Daye, Kiana Ledé and more. Later that year, he joined Keys on her single “Come For Me,” along with Daye, and Mariah Carey on her festive tune “Fall in Love at Christmas.”
In 2022, Khalid dropped three songs: “Last Call,” “Skyline” and “Satellite.” He also collaborated with Marshmello (“Numb”), Joe Jonas (“Not Alone”) and Dove Cameron (“We Go Down Together”).
Khalid kept the momentum going in 2023 with his smooth song “Softest Touch” and “Silver Platter” from The Barbie Album.
