John Legend Releases New Song ‘Don’t Need to Sleep’

R&B

John Legend has returned with “Don’t Need to Sleep,” his first solo song of 2023.

The uplifting anthem encourages listeners to continue pursuing their dreams, even in the midst of uncertainty. In essence, our dreams are more than fleeting scenes from our slumber.

“Bent but not broken / Down but not hopeless / Eyes are wide open I know it / Don’t need to sleep to dream,” he sings.

Legend co-wrote “Don’t Need to Sleep” with Justin Tranter and Oak Felder, who also produced the piano-laden tune. According to press materials, “a powerful music video” is expected to arrive soon.

“Don’t Need to Sleep” is featured in the documentary film, We Dare to Dream, which tells the story of five Olympic refugee athletes “who swim, run and fight their way to opportunity and safety in host nations across the world.”

Legend executive produced We Dare to Dream, along with Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie. The Waad Al-Kateab-directed film is now streaming on Peacock.

“Don’t Need to Sleep” is Legend’s first taste of new music since releasing his double album, LEGEND, in 2022.
