Jeremy Spencer Reflects on His Psychosexual Project: “People Fu*king Hated It”

Metal

Hindsight is always 20/20, but for ex-Five Finger Death Punch drummer Jeremy Spencer, the past is much clearer looking back at his ill-fated Psychosexual and Psycho Synner projects. You may not remember them, or you only remember them with a snarky joke attached to it, but the projects saw Spencer dressed up as a devil, performing campy songs like “The Torture Never Stops” and “Let the Sin Begin.”

It was… rough.

Well, it turns out Spencer recognizes how the public felt about that particular part of his career. While speaking with Blabbermouth, he admitted that the projects he created to distance himself from his time in Five Finger Death Punch had an uphill battle from the get go.

“It was quite an experience. I wanted to do something really different from Death Punch. I wanted to do something visually stimulating and fun. It was supposed to be lighthearted and fun, but before we figured out our core sound, we released some cheesy and boneheaded songs early. I don’t think we recovered. People said, ‘This sucks.’ I said, ‘Hold on! It’s going to be different.’ We went on to release 11 albums and nine in one day. We worked our asses off. People fucking hated it. I was an easy target.

“I got to experience a lot of different styles of music. I did a song with Dave Wyndorf from Monster Magnet. To me, that was awesome. And we had seven number-one songs on the secondary radio market at rock radio. It was a band that did some cool things on the radio but could never break through into the public. They didn’t care. Now, Semi-Rotted is the only thing I’m focusing on.”

Nine albums in one day was… ambitious, to say the least. Especially when it seems like his association with FFDP might have tainted his project from the start, given how much everyone on the internet uses that band as a punching bag.

But let’s be real here. That Psychosexual and Psycho Synner shit was turbo cringe. It was the kind of thing you’d play for your friends to see how long it took for them to turn it off or walk away.

Still, it’s a good thing Spencer’s taking his talents away from the make up and cheesy songs about sin and sex and focusing on the more death metal sounding Semi-Rotted.
