Grammy winner Janelle Monáe has a new hit on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart with “Lipstick Lover.”
The Nate “Rocket” Wonder-produced track has seized the No. 1 spot this week, unseating Babyface’s five-week run with “As a Matter of Fact.”
“Lipstick Lover” is Monáe’s second No. 1 hit and the first from her most recent album, The Age of Pleasure, released June 19.
Monáe spent three weeks at No. 1 in late 2018 with “I Like That.” That track, which was certified gold by the RIAA in 2020, is from her acclaimed 2018 album Dirty Computer.
Elsewhere on Billboard, “Lipstick Lover” has reached No. 14 and No. 16 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Hot R&B Songs charts.
“Lipstick Lover,” unveiled as the second single from The Age of Pleasure, also has claimed the No. 1 position at R&B radio this week. The triumph also ends Babyface’s five-week run atop of that chart.
Monáe issued two videos for “Lipstick Lover,” the first of which was more explicit than the clean version she was compelled to release. Both visuals were co-directed with Alan Ferguson.
As mentioned above, The Age of Pleasure arrived in June via Wonderland Arts Society/Atlantic Records.
The album debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. It featured guest appearances from Grace Jones, Nia Long, Doechii, Amaarae, Seun Kuti and Egypt 80.
The latter two, part of a Nigerian collective, were featured on “Float,” a song that preceded The Age of Pleasure.
The collaboration soundtracked the NBA Saturday Primetime and the 2023 Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.
Monáe recently supported The Age of Pleasure with an appearance at last weekend’s Outside Lands Festival. She will continue performing music from the new album when she launches her headlining North American tour on Aug. 30 in Seattle, Washington.
The Age of Pleasure Tour will still conclude on Oct. 18 at YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, even after Monáe added four new dates last week. Get more ticket information at jmonae.com.
